Assignment 4 - Applying Lighting Techniques - Rejects

I took many photos for this assignment, as I usually do as I tend to have a specific idea in mind of how I want the image to come out. A couple of the shots I have submitted have been accidental and have turned out to look better than the image I was aiming for. Here are a few of the images that didn't quite make the cut for various reasons.

This image was for the texture quality of the assignment. I was hoping to show the bristly quality of the hair more successfully. I like the unbalanced composition of the image but I do not like the level of reflection off the wooden floor of that the heel appears wonky. I also do not think that the image was strong enough as the hair needs to appear clearer and the overall shot must be sharper to illustrate the point in a better way.

I think that for this texture shot the ISO was probably too high. I was hoping that having the lamp highlight the heel would show off the hair texture better as it caught the light but instead it just caused a distraction as it was just way to bright even with the diffuser fitted.

An attempt at colour this time. I wanted a way to show the main colour of the leopard print toe, but also the black of the heel. I rejected this image because it actually looks like I have photoshopped two images and stuck them together. I also think that in a way I am photographing too literally and more thought could go into composition.

Another colour shot. I liked the overall composition of this attempt but there is way too much of the inside of the shoe and not enough leopard print which to me does not fit the criteria well enough and therefore is not show the quality as well as it could.

Colour again here. in a way I enjoyed shooting this the most as I seemed to be able to experiment more easily with ideas. With shoe of the other qualities such as shape, I knew in my head the kind of image I wanted to produce. This is why there are not any shape rejects as they all were 'worse' images of what I submitted. I like this shot but I wanted it to appear more symmetrical and seeing as the shoes are not completely identical it was impossible to achieve.

Playing around with the colour composition again, here I was trying to create a larger surface of leopard print so that it made a stronger impact. Aside from the fact the the toe of the shoes is out of focus, photographing the inside of the shoe still showed too much reflection here.

I did actually take rather a lot of images, pushing 100, for this assignment. But like I said earlier quite a lot were versions of what I had chosen to include in the assignment, hence why I have not included them in the rejects. There were also many versions of the rejects shown, that I had taken while I was developing ideas and trying to create my final shot for each quality. There are also the shots that were too appalling to even feature in this section, some of which were promptly deleted as I was ashamed at the images I had created. Even then these terrible photos had their place in showing me where I was going wrong and then led me to improve. Every shot has its place in the creative and learning process, and without the photos I find very embarrassing to show anyone, at least I can see myself how far I have come.
